Stand up if you were pre-teen and adolescent in the 80’s. Now get down to Electric Avenue in Courtenay Place (just off Taranaki Street) and wallow in the glory of your younger days.
Electric Avenue exudes the energy and a little of the brashness that the 80’s were all about. The music and video screen over the bar launches you into a never-ending game of “Omigod, I remember that … who is it ?!” And on top of that, it’s the first bar in Wellington to have Becks on tap. You can get something to eat – there’s a great Tapas menu and you can have steak three ways or chicken or fish. But this is a bar first and foremost – with plush couches set in booths around the perimeter and plenty of room for standing, foot-tapping and as the night gets going, a little bit of dancing.
There’s a great cocktail list and upstairs is another bar area leading out onto a balcony overlooking the ongoing party that is Courtenay Place at night. Electric Avenue is open every night from 4pm till late and there’s a DJ running more of the great 80’s music that you never realised you liked so much. Upstairs is available for hire too if you want to get a group together. So go on, give George Michael a break and get yourself into Electric Avenue – and don’t forget, U2 and Bruce Springsteen were there as well.
